Mozilla Introduces Prism Beta

Mozilla Prism's LogoMozilla prism is a program that can take your everyday web applications straight to the desktop. Prism is already in use by Yahoo! for their Zimbra suite and is now open to end users to use for their favorite web applications.

When I first used Prism, I first thought it was pointless since it seemed like a simple web browser that opens a URL shortcut on your desktop. But Mozilla does make a great point on the Prism website:

“Unstable applications can slow down or crash your entire browser.”

How many times have we all been writing a paper, either for work or school, using Google Docs or Zoho Writer and listening to Pandora at the same time when Flash decides to stop working? This usually requires a restart of Firefox and the retyping of several lines. With Prism, it allows all those apps to work separately from the browser thus taking a few weights off your browser’s back. If Flash decides to take a dump, only Prism will be effected. Unfortunately for you, you will have no excuse to stop working. I hope you enjoy my little demo below (it was on an older slow computer)!

Available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Mozilla Prism can be downloaded at prism.mozilla.com

The Mozilla Prism logo is © Mozilla, Inc. and  is being used for news reporting under fair use.

Hubble Failure Pushes Shuttles Off Schedule

Hopefully you weren’t looking forward to October’s flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis to the Hubble. It appears that the CU/SDF-A electronics box had a malfunction on Saturday possibly causing the flight of Atlantis to be postponed until at least January or February if NASA decides to replace the hardware. If the delay is confirmed, November’s launch of Discovery will still proceed as planned.

Google announces ‘Android’ but no gPhone

Google, yesterday announced ‘Android’, a new Linux and Java based OS for phones but didn’t say anything about a physical gPhone. I’m very disappointed because I think it would get competetive towards Apple’s Iphone. I guess Apple will continue to rein on the cell phone market for now. One thing I do like, however is the fact that Google is distributing this to cell phone makers such at Motorola (Apple and Blackberry aren’t a part of this list) making a bigger market than the Iphone. Also this software is going to be mostly open unlike the Iphone in which it is definitely closed. I’m interested to see how successful this will be. My guess is it will probably fail. I was hoping for an actual physical phone.

Firefox the new IE?

I recently read an article on Wired that claimed they thought Firefox maybe the new IE. The article stated that newerfirefox.JPG releases of the software have been sluggish and unstable. Where went that Firefox we saw in 1.0? This seems to happen a lot when an open source company gains lots of the market. The company rolls out new features and doesn’t really pay attention to the stability and performance of the software itself. Wired News has a theory that when 3rd party add-ons started showing stability and performance issues, Mozilla put the best of the best into its browser. Instead of having the users add what they want to add (such as spell checker and the RSS reader) people who rarely use them are pretty much stuck with them. If this keeps happening, there could be some real problems with the browser in the future.

Google2.0 Now out!

*I didn’t get this out this morning so my post is late :P

Google has reformatted their search a little bit, making it easier to navigate from page to page. This has been dubbed Google2.0 in the blogosphere. Google has been known to test out a new layout every now and then, but I think this one is a real winner!

google.JPG

Here is a look at the new Google.Notice how the bar that was above the search box is now in the upper left corner, just.

googlemenue.JPG

The “more button” is now a drop down menu, making it a ton easier and faster to search using the other Google services(i.e. Google Blog Search)

When you search for something and there is an article about it in the news, Google with put it in with their search results, Google has been doing this for the past few months, but I just thought I should point it out :) Also there is another bar above the results so you can go straight to the images, videos, and news concerning what you searched.

These changes may not look too major, but I think they make it a whole lot easier and faster to do what you have to do.

NASA Shows Off James Webb Space Telescope

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

As the Hubble Space Telescope condition keeps declining, NASA has been showing off Hubble’s Successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. This telescope is a lot larger than Hubble at 40 feet high and 80 feet long. The James Web Telescope is about 1,200 pounds and takes a whole team of 12 people four days to assemble. It will be able to see deeper into space than Hubble ever did and is expected to launch in 2013. I personally was surprised when I saw this. To me it looks like a satellite dish on a five layer trampoline. This is one unique looking satellite! ;)
